1st HKU-CUHK Joint Postdoctoral Biomedical Sciences Symposium 2024

The 1st HKU-CUHK Joint Postdoctoral Biomedical Sciences Symposium 2024 was successfully held on 22 March 2024 at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. This symposium was co-organized by the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU-SBMS) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK-SBS), with Prof. Martin C.H. Cheung and Dr. Jayne Barbour from HKU-SBMS, along with Prof. Stephen K.W. Tsui and Dr. Carol Lee from CUHK-SBS serving as key members of the organizing committee.

Research by SBS member Prof. Ke Ya confirms the existence of discrete number sense in rats

Research co-led by neuroscientists Prof. Ke Ya at the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Prof. Yung Wing-ho at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has made a groundbreaking discovery regarding number sense in animals by confirming the existence of discrete number sense in rats, offering a crucial animal model for investigating the neural basis of numerical ability and disability in humans.

Academic Exchange Meeting of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Greater Bay Area Institute of Precision Medicine

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) hosted the Academic Exchange Meeting with the Greater Bay Area Institute of Precision Medicine (GBA-IPM) on 28 March 2024. The event took place in Room G02 of the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building, following GBA-IPM's visit to the School in February.

Visit of the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Following the signing of the MoU in May 2023, a delegation from the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University Thailand visited the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) on 24 April 2024.

Visit of the Greater Bay Area Institute of Precision Medicine

A delegation led by Dr. Lin Xinhua, Executive Director of the Greater Bay Area Institute of Precision Medicine, paid a visit to the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) on 1 February 2024.

Vincent Cheng Yin Chun, BSc graduate awarded prestigious fellowship from the National Ataxia Foundation

Vincent Cheng Yin Chun, a 2021 BSc graduate in Biomedical Sciences, is currently pursuing his D.Phil. in Prof. Esther Becker's Laboratory at the University of Oxford. He has been awarded a prestigious research fellowship from the National Ataxia Foundation for his project titled “Elucidating developmental gene expression changes in Spinocerebellar Ataxia 44”. The fellowship provides USD $25,000 in support, enabling him to explore the mechanisms behind the abnormal development of nerve cells in the cerebellum, contributing to the progression of Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCA). In the long run, his goal is to identify new therapeutic strategies for SCA patients.

Tsang Kin Ching, B.Sc. Graduate in Biomedical Sciences

It is always inspiring to learn from teachers and peers about their ideas and scientific findings. During our undergraduate study, not only did we acquire biomedical science knowledge from teachers through regular lectures, but we also got plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas with classmates on various occasions, such as Summer Undergraduate Biomedical Research Attachment (SUBRA), Capstone Research Project presentation, and research days, to name a few. I am grateful for the experience and knowledge acquired during my undergraduate study, which has widened my horizons for further exploration in the field of biomedical sciences.

As a kick-off for the new year of 2024, MSc Programme in Genomics and Bioinformatics has held the Japan Study Tour 2024 on 2-6 January 2024 for its current students and alumni.

Crash Course for Hong Kong Association of Clinicians in Training

On 23 March 2024, the members of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) took part at the crash course organised by the Hong Kong Association of Clinicians in Training (HKACT). The event aimed to support future clinicians (from preclinical students to housemen) in exploring and developing their potential and personalized career paths. Students gained hands-on experience in handling cell culture, and visualize the GFP stained neuroblastoma cells.
