SBS Summer Research Internship & Dissection Workshop 2025 for Medical Students
7 Aug 2025
Details:

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) continued to organize the SBS Summer Research Internship (SRI) programme and Summer Dissection Workshop for medical students at CUHK again this year between June and August. This programme aims to nurture research talents of MBChB-GPS students to unleash their potential as future physician-scientists.

This year, three Year 1 and three Year 2 medical students took part in the SRI under the supervision of seven investigators of our School, participating an 8-week summer research attachment (see the table below). It allows participants to gain hands-on research experience under the supervision of research mentors from SBS during the summer break.

The SPI ends with a closing ceremony on 7 August 2025, where participants shared their research experiences, and talked about how they see the connection between biomedical research and their future. They were awarded a certificate of accomplishment for their satisfactory performance.

Mentee Year Research Mentor Project Title
Mr. Kwong Wang Chit 1 Prof. Jiang Xiaohua Application of pluripotent stem cell-derived neural cells for basic research and clinical applications
Mr. Lam Man Ho Anson 2 Prof. Gu Shen Identification and functional characterization of novel genetic alternations through genome-wide sequencing analysis
Mr. Lam Siu Hang Issac 1 Prof. Zhou Jingying Elucidating the hepatic immune environment in chronic liver diseases and liver cancers
Miss Lo Wing Sum 2 Prof. Long Xiaohang Deciphering the Mechanisms of Immunotherapy Resistance in Hepatocellular Carcinoma by Single-cell Multi-omic Analysis
Miss Wan Che Ching Chloe 2 Prof. Zhao Hui Functional study of Coiled-coil Domain-Containing Protein-141 (CCDC141) during cardiomyocyte differentiation
Miss Wong Agnes Cheuk Lam 1 Prof. Long Xiaohang Investigating the Function of Tumor-associated Macrophages (TAMs) in Immunotherapy Resistance in Hepatocellular Carcinoma using Human Embryonic Stem Cell (hESC)-derived Macrophages

Also, the School organized the annual Summer Workshop: Enhancement of Dissection Technique for 33 medical students. In the workshop, each student could choose a body region to focus on and dissect. Each participating student was required to prepare a 10-minute video to present the anatomical and clinical importance of the specimen they worked on. Through this workshop, the students got exposed to advanced dissection techniques and learn about presentation of specimens. At the conclusion of the workshop, participating students with the best performance were selected for the Mr Shiu Hing Tong Prizes For the Best Student Prosectors”
