BMS students’ team received iGEM Competition 2024 Silver Award
7 Nov 2024

The team formed by students from the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme at the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) was awarded a Silver Medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2024 Giant Jamboree held from 23 to 26 October 2024 in Paris.

The name “IOSA” is inspired by Laso, the Greek goddess associated with recovery from illness. The team’s goal is to develop innovative oral dual-therapy solutions to promote weight loss and combat obesity through genetic engineering.

In the name “IOSA,” ‘IO’ represents the ten members of the team, while ‘O’ signifies ‘Obesity’. The letter “S” stands for “Synergy,” highlighting how the collaborative efforts of all ten team members create a more powerful impact than working independently. The letter “A” denotes “Ace,” symbolizing their unwavering dedication to excellence in this competition and their determination to succeed and shine, both in the lab and in practical applications.

Prof. Stephen K.W Tsui, Associate Director (Research) of SBS, served as the primary principal investigator supervising the project. Other faculty members, including Prof. Kwan Yiu Wa, Prof. Hui Xiaoyan Hannah, Dr. Ann S. N. Lau, Mr. Pang Chun Keung Daniel and Ms. Zhao Xuemei also contributed as instructors or advisors.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the IOSA team for their exceptional performance and wish them continued success in their academic endeavours.
