The Stream is research-oriented. Students should show ability to perform independent research and inform themselves in depth about the fields of knowledge relevant to the topic of their projects.

Full-time students with a research master’s degree normally take three years while those without a research master’s degree take four years to fulfill all the requirements of the Stream, and the courses required are listed as below:

a Each PhD student at the pre-candidacy stage is required to pass the candidacy examination, submit a thesis proposal and pass an oral examination of the thesis proposal for the advancement to his/her post-candidacy stage.

b In addition to satisfying the Stream requirements and other requirements as prescribed by the Division, each PhD student at the post-candidacy stage is required to submit a thesis based on his/her research for examination and pass an oral defence of the thesis for graduation.

c Students with a research master’s degree are not required to take courses for the fourth year.
