Modeling Cancer with Human Embryonic Stem Cells

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a common childhood malignant tumor of neural crest (NC) origin with remarkable heterogeneity in outcomes. Using a human embryonic stem cell (#hESC)-derived NC model, Prof. Jiang Xiaohua of the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), CUHK and her collaborator Prof. Zou Lin of Chongqing University have identified CD55 as a novel prognostic marker and therapeutic target in MYCN-amplified NB. hESC may serve as a developmental stage- and species-appropriate platform to study the cellular and molecular basis of pediatric cancers. The findings have been published in Neuro-Oncology: https://academic.oup.com/neuro-oncology/advance-article/doi/10.1093/neuonc/noab241/6398621
